Morning mist lifts off the high puna as you step onto the Salkantay Trail, a raw ribbon of stone and grass that climbs toward a jagged horizon. On day one the trail rises past Soraypampa, where Humantay’s turquoise lake dares you to stop; later you shoulder your pack toward the Salkantay pass, a cold, wind-raked saddle at about 4,650 m.
