Morning light slices the high Andes as a string of hikers crosses the pampa toward Soraypampa, the jagged face of Nevado Salkantay looming above. Cold air bites at 3,900 m; below, cloud forest waits, humid and green. Over the next four days the route moves from windswept high pass to lush river valleys, ending at the terraces and stonework of Machu Picchu.
challenging.
4 days.
Good cardiovascular fitness and prior day-hike experience at altitude; able to hike 6–10 km on steep terrain per day.
No special government permit is required for the Salkantay Route itself, but a valid Machu Picchu entry ticket is included and required for the final day.
Day 2 is the toughest: about 3–5 hours of steady ascent to ~4,630 m, followed by a long descent; pace yourself and drink frequently.
Huayna Picchu access depends on ticket availability and is not guaranteed; if included it will be noted in your Machu Picchu ticket options.
Symptoms are common—headache, nausea, fatigue; acclimatize in Cusco, rise slowly, hydrate, and inform your guide immediately if symptoms worsen.
The Salkantay corridor was part of pre-Columbian networks connecting high puna communities with jungle valleys; the name Salkantay comes from Quechua and refers to the dominant snow-capped peak.
Trail erosion and overcrowding at Machu Picchu are managed through timed entries and local guides—stay on trails, pack out waste, and respect local land-use practices to reduce impact.
