Before dawn the road lifts out of Salta and the air thins; the bus hums while the landscape changes from irrigated valleys to the hard light of the Puna. You follow the ribbon of the historic Train to the Clouds, cross the Quebrada del Toro and climb toward San Antonio de los Cobres, where wind and sky seem to trade places.
moderate.
14 hours (full day).
Suitable for travelers with reasonable stamina; long periods in vehicle mixed with short walks at high altitude require basic fitness and no serious cardiac/respiratory conditions.
The route reaches altitudes around 4,200 meters; passengers with serious heart, respiratory, or spinal conditions, pregnant travelers, or those with severe obesity are advised not to join and should consult a physician first.
Plenty: La Polvorilla Viaduct for railway/landscape shots, expansive reflections and perspective tricks on Salinas Grandes, and color-banded Cerro de los Siete Colores in Purmamarca—bring wide and telephoto lenses.
Walking is limited to short guided explorations at viewpoints, salt flats, and community stops—no extended hikes, but terrain can be uneven and slippery on salt crusts.
Transport in a specially equipped vehicle, professional guide, bottled water, breakfast, snacks, lunch and beverages are included according to the operator’s listing.
The Train to the Clouds route was built in the early 20th century as a strategic railway across the Andes; remnants of that era remain visible in viaducts and engineering works along the way.
Salinas Grandes and surrounding Puna habitats are fragile—stay on designated tracks, avoid disturbing salt crusts and respect community-managed access to sensitive pools.
