You step out of the van into an island wind that pushes at your jacket like a quick question — will you climb? The route rises from wide, grazed pastures to the vertical face of Rocha do Chambre at roughly 700 meters, where the island unfolds: Azinhal valley below, the basalt spine of Pico Alto, and the ringed hollows of volcanic calderas beyond. Azorean heather brushes the trail’s edge; occasionally a cow regards you with island calm.
moderate.
7 hours.
Moderate — able to hike 10–12 km with some elevation gain and short steep sections; comfortable on uneven terrain.
Participants should have a moderate fitness level — able to hike several kilometers over uneven ground and handle short, steep sections; not recommended for those with serious heart or back issues.
The guided visit involves uneven, sometimes wet footing and steps; no technical caving gear is needed but closed-toe shoes and care on stairs are essential.
The tour includes transport in an air-conditioned vehicle and typically starts/ends near common pickup points in Angra do Heroísmo; confirm exact pickup during booking.
This tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with significant spinal/heart conditions; check operator policies for minimum age and supervised participation for children.
Terceira’s central highlands were formed by successive volcanic eruptions; Algar do Carvão is an exposed chimney whose deposits date back roughly two millennia, recording major eruptive events.
Stick to marked trails, avoid disturbing endemic heather, and carry out all waste — fragile upland soils and rare plants recover slowly from trampling.
