Cenotes are sinkholes formed in the Yucatán’s porous limestone and were crucial water sources and ritual sites for the Maya; many local place names reflect this heritage.
The karst aquifer feeding cenotes is fragile—visitors are encouraged to use reef-safe products, avoid littering, and respect restricted areas to protect water clarity and habitats.
