A cleft of basalt and water greets you as you step from the van — the Alcantara River daring you into cool pools carved by lava and time. Guides hand out wetsuits, life jackets and helmets; instructors brief the group beside a cascade, then lead you downstream where five marked jumps—some as high as 5 meters—punctuate the route. Between jumps the river invites you to float, swim and body-raft through narrow chutes and calm basins.
