You step from the shuttle into a raw, warm wind that smells of sulfur and wet earth. The trail climbs through dry forest, volcanic pumice and fumarole steam, each lookout throwing a different face of Rincón de la Vieja at you: cracked lava flows, steaming vents and a canopy where birds call like punctuation. The guide points to a distant plume and the mountain seems to breathe.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park was established in the early 1970s to protect volcanic landscapes and tropical dry forest; the area also reflects Guanacaste’s mixed Indigenous and ranching heritage.
Stay on marked trails and avoid bringing soaps into thermal pools; the park is fragile and visitor behavior directly affects water quality and wildlife.
