A pre-dawn drive from Colombo dissolves the city into rice paddies and scrub as the road heads south; by mid-morning the safari gates open and the land feels larger, dry grasses brushing the sides of a slow-moving jeep. Riders watch a herd of Sri Lankan elephants move like slow tides across a plain while ostriches and zebras lift their heads like sentries.

The park balances tourism and captive-animal care; visitors should follow rules to minimize disturbance and support local conservation education programs.
