El Retiro was once private royal land tied to a 17th-century palace; it opened to the public in the late 19th century as Madrid modernized its civic spaces.
The park is maintained by Madrid’s municipal services; visitors are asked to stay on paths, avoid disturbing plantings, and dispose of waste in marked bins to protect mature trees and bird habitat.
