Póvoa de Varzim developed as a fishing community and later a seaside resort; Vila do Conde has roots in medieval shipbuilding and river trade at the Ave estuary.
Coastal dunes and estuary habitats are fragile—stick to designated paths and avoid disturbing bird nesting areas; local efforts work to manage dune erosion and sustainable fisheries.
