Dust and sagebrush lift as the canvas-topped safari truck eases off pavement and onto washboard track. The air smells of sun-warmed earth and spring sap; distant buttes of the Wyoming Badlands edge the horizon while a scattering of Indian paintbrush colors the roadside. Guides scan the ridgelines and call out a movement—an ankle-deep herd pausing in the lee of a ridge—giving the landscape the uneasy charm of the wild.
