History

Ras Al Khaimah was a hub of pearling, fishing and tribal fortifications; several forts date to pre-oil coastal defense systems and 18th–19th century sheikdom conflicts.

Conservation

Rapid coastal development and tourism pressure threaten intertidal habitats and fragile archaeological sites—stick to marked paths, avoid taking artifacts, and minimize single-use plastics.

Adventure tips

Bring cash for museum entrySome museums and heritage sites require on-site payments for tickets—carry small UAE dirham notes or a card if available.

Sun protection is essentialBring a wide-brim hat, high-SPF sunscreen and sunglasses—shade is limited at forts and coastal spots.

Wear sturdy shoesPaths at Dhayah and Falayah include loose gravel and steep stone steps; closed-toe shoes improve stability.

Confirm pickup detailsProvide your Dubai hotel name and room number in advance and reconfirm pickup time to avoid delays on a tight schedule.

Recommended gear

Comfortable walking shoes: Provides traction and support on gravel paths, stone steps and uneven fort approaches.
Sun hat & sunglasses: Protects against strong midday sun when touring exposed coastal and hilltop sites.
Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated in the UAE climate is critical—many stops have limited immediate water access.
Light layers or shawl: Mornings can be cool in winter and indoor air conditioning at museums can feel chilly.
