Embark on a journey back in time with the Tanfield Railway Freight Train Guard Experience. Enjoy a round trip and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of being a guard on our heritage freight train. Travel in our Harton A16 brake van, guided by one of our skilled guards.
Experience the responsibilities of a guard as you check the train, apply the handbrake, change the tail lamp, wave the green flag and view the Tanfield Railway from a unique perspective. Our knowledgeable Guards will explain the roles of the Guard and are happy answer any questions you may have. To fully embrace the experience, don a dust coat and flat cap, provided by us!
What's Included
Full Round Trip: Enjoy a full round trip on our Harton A16 brake van, getting hands-on with the tasks of a guard. Complimentary Day Travel: The Experience Pass includes unlimited train travel for the day for you and one guest. Your guest can join you in the brake van during the experience. Tanfield Goody Bag: Take home a piece of the railway with a special Tanfield goody bag. Traditional Attire: Wear a flat cap and dust coat to get into the spirit of the experience. PPE (gloves, boiler suit) is provided. Please wear sturdy shoes.

The Freight Train Guard Experience supports the preservation of Tanfield, the world’s oldest railway. Participants must be 18 or over and complete a health and safety declaration prior to participation. This activity may not be suitable for those with certain disabilities, especially those affecting mobility, concentration, dexterity, and coordination.
