A line of green mountains rises against a bright Caribbean sky as the van leaves San Juan behind; mist clings to hollows and the scent of roasted coffee hangs in the air. The day begins with a family-run coffee stop where beans are still dried in the sun, then moves inland into the Central Mountain Range—narrow trails wind through subtropical forest, streams call out and a 150-foot cascade waits where cliffs funnel water into a clear plunge pool.
challenging.
8–9 hours.
Should be in good physical condition with stamina for sustained climbs, balance on uneven terrain, and comfort with river crossings.
The hike is moderate to challenging with steep sections and multiple stream crossings; participants should be physically fit, have good balance, and be comfortable with sustained uphill walking.
The meet-up is at a pre-selected San Juan location (DoubleTree by Hilton); transport to the central highlands is provided as part of the day tour.
A bottle of water and fresh-cut tropical fruit are provided on the trail; a traditional countryside meal at the end is available to purchase but not included in the base price.
Restrooms are available at the coffee stop before the hike and at the finish in the countryside; natural breaks occur on the trail but facilities are limited.
The central highlands have long been Puerto Rico’s coffee-producing heartland; small family farms that dot the slopes date back to 19th-century coffee booms and shaped rural mountain culture.
This tour visits a private reserve—stick to trails, pack out waste, and support guides who practice low-impact operations to protect fragile stream and forest habitats.
