A morning mist lifts off terraces as the limousine bus leaves Hanoi; within hours limestone ridges sharpen against the sky and green valleys open like chapters. On day one you step into damp trailhead soil, following off-road tracks that climb to Kho Muong village, wind past a vast cave mouth and spill into remote Bang village where paddy steps fall away toward a distant stream.
