The gate opens onto a short dirt drive and the scent of wet earth—ferns and tropical leaf mold—greets you before the trail does. Within minutes the path narrows and the Hule’ia watershed drops away to your right while the Haʻupu mountain range looms to the north; the hike is a brisk quarter-mile (one way) that finishes at two private falls carved into volcanic rock. Bamboo Falls (about 30 feet) is immediate and photogenic; Papakolea Falls (about 60 feet) arrives a little farther on, louder and colder, with a shallow pool that invites a quick swim and the chance to slip behind the curtain of water.
