The Grand Canal follows the line of an ancient river that fed the lagoon; its banks became the stage for Venetian merchant families who built palaces from the 12th to 18th centuries.
Venice’s lagoon is ecologically sensitive; support licensed operators and avoid littering or feeding wildlife to reduce impacts on water quality and habitats.
