With the expulsion of Jews and Moors from Spain by Catholic kings, the exodus began. Many were those who settled in Portugal. At that time, D. Manuel I reigned under pressure from the Catholic kings in Spain to also expel Jews and Moors. Several were the ones who decided to settle in Arraiolos, due to the warm welcome, abundance of herds, excellent wool and diversity of plants indispensable for dyeing the wool and manufacturing the canvases.
