Speyside’s whisky boom accelerated in the 19th century after changes to excise law made legal distilling more viable; many distilleries grew around rivers that provided soft water and transport routes.
Distilleries rely on clean water and local peatlands; choose operators that minimize water use and support peatland restoration and responsible tasting practices.
