You leave Reykjavík before dawn and the road opens like a map of dark ridges and low light. The Ring Road pushes you east, glaciers and volcanic peaks growing larger through the windscreen; gulls wheel above coastal outwash and, later, the steady roar of Skógafoss announces itself before you see it — water falling 60 metres in a single, thunderous sheet.
