You step through Logan’s arrivals and the harbor air still carries the salt and urgency of the city — ferries slip from their slips and the runway lights blink like a slow metronome. A professional chauffeur meets you with a placard, helps load your bag into a Cadillac XTS or Chevrolet Suburban, and the city unwinds toward you: the Millers River channel, the brassy outlines of the Zakim Bridge, and the brickwork of Back Bay rushing past.

Logan International Airport sits on reclaimed shoreline and islands connected to the mainland in the 20th century; Boston’s road pattern preserves colonial-era lanes layered over glacial bedrock.
Boston Harbor has undergone major cleanup efforts since the 1970s; limiting idling during transfers and using ride consolidations helps reduce local emissions.
