Lake Pontchartrain has long been a working waterway for Indigenous peoples and later European settlers; the Causeway and surrounding settlements reflect 20th-century engineering and regional boating culture.
Pontchartrain faces water-quality and shoreline erosion issues; support local operators who follow no-wake zones, avoid marsh disturbance, and pack out waste.
