History

Manuel Antonio was designated a national park in 1972 to protect coastal rainforest and marine terraces as development grew along Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast.

Conservation

The park is small and heavily visited, so strict rules on food, plastics and staying on trails help limit human impact and protect sensitive wildlife and nesting sites.

Adventure tips

Go early for active wildlifeBook a morning departure — cooler temps and peak animal activity mean better sightings of monkeys, sloths and birds.

No outside food or single-use plasticsThe park prohibits food and plastics to protect wildlife; leave snacks on the bus or eat beforehand.

Wear grippy shoesTrails are short but can be uneven and slippery after rain; trail shoes or sturdy sneakers are best.

Give wildlife spaceDo not touch or feed animals; use the guide’s optics to observe without disturbing behavior.

Recommended gear

Sturdy trail shoes or sneakers: Grip and ankle support help on muddy boardwalks and roots.
1–2 L reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated in the tropical heat — water is not sold on some trails.
Light rain jacket or poncho: Afternoon and rainy-season showers are frequent; pack a compact layer.
Binoculars or camera with zoom: Although guides supply Swarovski optics, personal optics help capture distant wildlife and birds.
