JFK opened as Idlewild in the late 1940s and was renamed in 1963; much of the surrounding land was expanded into airport property from Jamaica Bay wetlands.
Jamaica Bay and nearby wetlands are protected habitats; minimizing idling and choosing low-emission transfers can help reduce local air impacts.
