Hidden on the slope of one of the many valleys of the Serra do Açor, it is known for its typical shale houses, with black slate roofs and windows and doors painted blue, as well as its narrow, steep, and labyrinthine streets. It is one of the 12 Historical Villages of Portugal and has been a National Heritage site since 1978.
