You pull away from Fredericksburg’s courthouse square and the road unfurls through low, ribbed limestone hills that lean into the sky like old ranch hands. Live oaks and juniper shoulder the lanes while wildflowers—especially in spring—push color into the pastures; the landscape here seems to test how patient you are with good things, and encourages slow tasting.

Fredericksburg was founded by German settlers in 1846; viticulture in the Hill Country expanded in the late 20th century as boutique wineries took advantage of calcareous soils and heritage ranch land.
Many Hill Country vineyards use dry-farming or minimal irrigation and encourage responsible tasting practices; always pack out trash and respect private ranch property.
