A morning drive out of Lucerne opens into a steady ribbon of road that peels away from lowland villages and climbs toward jagged ridgelines. The van slips past Lake Lungern’s glassy face and then along Lake Brienz’s turquoise fringe before the air thins and trees lean into the wind. By the time the cable car lifts from Grindelwald, the summit at First (2,168 m) presents itself like a chance to stand above the everyday.
