On a clear morning the van slides out of Vienna and the city grid softens into rolling wheat fields and the dark band of the Vienna Woods. Windows frame patchwork farmland, then the ribbon of lakes in the Salzkammergut appear—mirror-flat water punctuated by church spires and alpine farms—culminating at Hallstatt, where pastel houses cling to a cliff above a narrow lake.
