You arrive with the caldera at your side and the Aegean daring you to look away—white houses stacked on black rock, stairways that climb like narrow ribbons between blue-domed roofs. Adventure tips

Time Oia for sunsetArrive at Oia at least 60–90 minutes before sunset to find a viewpoint and avoid the heaviest crowds; parking and alleys fill quickly.

Wear sturdy shoesCobblestone lanes and volcanic sand demand supportive footwear rather than flip-flops to prevent slips on uneven surfaces.

Carry water and snacksSantorini can be hot and dry; bring a reusable water bottle and light snacks—shops exist but prices and queues can vary.

Have small cash on handMany local cafés and small shops prefer cash for quick purchases—carry euros in small denominations.

Recommended gear

Sturdy walking shoes: Supportive shoes help on cobbles, stairs and volcanic sand.
Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in Santorini’s dry climate and helps avoid buying single-use plastic.
Sun protection (hat & sunscreen): Open caldera viewpoints offer little shade—sunscreen and a wide-brim hat reduce sun exposure.
Light windproof layer: A thin jacket helps during breezy mornings or evenings on exposed caldera edges.
