The bell at the Big Red Barn rings as the carriage steps off into a cooling Charleston evening. Horse hooves tap along brick-lined streets while gaslamp glow and the scent of magnolia follow; the city moves at a softer pace than its daytime bustle. Riders sit back as a licensed guide narrates episodes from colonial port days through civil-war queues and 19th‑century architecture, stopping to point out shuttered courtyards, the City Market, and the Circular Church graveyard.

Downtown tours aim to be low‑impact, but visitors should respect private gardens and avoid feeding wildlife; support local preservation by following guidelines and choosing licensed operators.
