History

Dubai Creek was the center of pearling and dhow trade that built the city; Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1787, is one of the oldest surviving structures.

Conservation

Rapid development pressures creek habitats; responsible tourism — sticking to paths, avoiding litter, and supporting local conservation groups — helps protect bird and shoreline ecosystems.

Adventure tips

Carry small changeMany souk vendors prefer cash and smaller denominations for bargaining and quick purchases.

Dress respectfullyShoulders and knees covered in markets and neighborhoods shows cultural respect and eases access to some shops.

Stay hydrated and time your visitChoose morning or late afternoon in summer; carry water and plan short breaks to avoid heat fatigue.

Practice polite bargainingStart lower than your target price, be friendly, and expect to meet midway; walking away is part of the dance.

Recommended gear

Comfortable walking shoes: Closed shoes handle uneven alleys and market floors better than sandals.
Sun hat and UV sunglasses: Protects against strong sun during abra crossings and open promenades.
Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is critical, especially in Dubai’s warm climate.
Light scarf or shawl: Useful for modest dress, sudden breezes on the creek or covering shoulders in conservative sites.
