You leave Dubrovnik before dawn and watch the coast shrink as the road climbs into the karst highlands. By mid-morning the pines close in, the air cools, and the first turquoise glimmers of Plitvice’s lower lakes appear through the trees. Wooden walkways span glassy water; waterfalls dare you closer, their currents pushing you along the edges of natural terraces.
