The day begins before sunrise on Cairo's western edge, the city shrinking as the highway unfurls into flat ochre plains. After roughly 350 km and about four hours in an air-conditioned vehicle, the palms of Bahariya Oasis appear like a green refuge; from there a private 4x4 pushes deeper into the desert, tires crunching across wind-scoured gravel.
