Morning light on the Pacific slides across low hills as your private vehicle eases out of Los Angeles — the city giving way to freeway palettes of citrus groves, oil fields and scrub. You cross the coastal plain and the sea begins to call, wind picking up off the Channel as the driver points out farmland and mission bell towers rolling into view.
