You step off the air-conditioned van into humid Belizean air; towering rainforest breathes above and a narrow river hisses nearby, daring you to float into the dark. Guides fit helmets and life vests with steady hands, and the river accepts you — slow at first, then pushing you through low passages where limestone ribs cut the light.

Belize’s cave systems were important in Maya ritual life; many caverns contain artifacts and were seen as passages to the underworld in Maya belief.
Stick to marked access points, use reef-safe sunscreen, and avoid touching cave formations—limestone deposits and fragile art can be damaged by oils and contact.
