A morning begins with the hum of a Belizean van and the rainforest closing behind you: palms and cedar give way to low limestone hills as guides unfold the story of the place.
moderate.
6 hours.
Suitable for travelers with moderate fitness; ability to climb short temple steps and climb into/out of a tube is required.
The guided rainforest hike is short—about 20 minutes—on informal trails to viewpoints and cave access points.
The float itself is low-impact, but you should be comfortable entering/exiting a tube, sitting upright for stretches, and negotiating short steps and slippery surfaces.
The operator supplies helmets, headlamps, life vests and tubes; bring your own shoes and a dry bag for personal items.
Children over roughly 40 inches tall can participate, but infants must sit on an adult’s lap; check age and health restrictions with the operator.
Altun Ha was a regional trade and ceremonial center; the site’s jade head indicates cosmological importance and long-distance trade ties during the Classic Maya era.
The karst and river ecosystems are sensitive to runoff and litter; stick to marked paths, avoid single-use plastics, and follow guide instructions to reduce impact.
