A low wake parts the glassy surface of the lake as the captain eases the bow away from a Como quay, mountains leaning in like watchful hosts. In an hour you move from urban quay to quiet coves, the shoreline revealing neoclassical gates, clipped gardens and the occasional tuft of laundry above narrow streets. Sunlight finds the mirrored curves of sculptures and the stucco facades of villas built when aristocrats and industrialists favored these sheltered waters.
