History

Bali’s villages grew around Hindu temples and the subak irrigation system, a communal water-management practice that shaped the island’s terraced landscapes and social rhythms.

Conservation

Respect temple areas, avoid single-use plastics, and keep to marked paths — overtourism strains water resources and local infrastructure in popular zones.

Adventure tips

Plan 2–3 main stopsTraffic is unpredictable; choose a couple of major sights plus one short detour to avoid rushing between remote sites.

Bring cash for temples and parkingSmall shops, temple donations, and parking are often cash-only — keep small denominations of IDR handy.

Confirm vehicle sizeSelect a minivan or minibus for groups to ensure comfort and luggage space during longer transfers.

Hydrate and protect from sunCarry a refillable water bottle and sunscreen — coastal and terrace stops offer little shade at midday.

Recommended gear

Sun hat and sunscreen: Essential for protection during open-air temple visits and rice-field walks.
Comfortable walking shoes: Useful for short hikes, temple steps, and uneven village paths.
Refillable water bottle: Stay hydrated between stops; many drivers can refill it from bottled water included.
Portable phone charger/power bank: Keeps navigation and photos powered during a long day on the road.
