Operated by Ceylon Reise · Negombo, Western Province
You arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and the road slips under a canopy of palms as the driver steers toward Negombo — the warm, humid air already pressing against the window. Over six days the island will alternate between mist-shrouded highlands and sun-baked southern coasts: tea terraces climbing the slopes of Nuwara Eliya, a rushing river daring you in Kitulgala, and the scrubland of Yala where the jeep’s engine punctuates the silence.
moderate.
6 days.
Moderate fitness—comfortable with multiple 2–5 hour drives, short hikes, rafting (mild rapids) and early starts.
Expect several stretches of 2–5 hours by private vehicle; the itinerary balances driving with activities like train travel, rafting and safari to avoid overly long consecutive transit days.
The experience includes the scenic train through hill country; the Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) to Ella segment takes roughly three hours and passes tea estates and hairpin bends.
Yala is known for leopard sightings, as well as elephants, sambar deer and a variety of birds; sightings aren’t guaranteed but early-morning drives increase chances.
Whale sightings are seasonal and weather-dependent; boats typically depart at dawn (around 5:00 a.m.) and local operators will advise on sea conditions and probability the evening before.
Kandy was the last independent kingdom of pre-colonial Sri Lanka and remains the spiritual heart due to the Temple of the Tooth; tea plantations expanded during British rule and shaped the hill-country economy.
Yala and coastal marine operations operate under permit systems; visitors should follow guide instructions, avoid feeding wildlife and minimize single-use plastics to reduce local impact.
