History

The Riviera Maya’s reefs grew on a submerged limestone shelf exposed after sea‑level shifts; communities here have long mixed fishing with growing tourism since the late 20th century.

Conservation

Choose reef‑safe products and avoid touching or standing on coral—local operators and marine parks work to reduce anchor damage and protect turtle nesting.

Adventure tips

Use reef‑safe sunscreenApply a biodegradable, reef‑safe sunscreen before boarding and reapply sparingly after snorkeling to protect coral and marine life.

Bring a snug snorkel maskA well‑fitting mask prevents leaks and fogging—consider bringing your own for comfort and clearer views of turtles and reef fish.

Plan for motion sensitivityIf prone to seasickness, take medication or use acupressure bands before departure; the first hour underway can be the roughest for some.

Lock valuables in a dry bagStow phones and small items in a waterproof bag while swimming and use the boat’s safe for anything valuable.

Recommended gear

Snorkel mask and fins: Personal gear ensures fit and comfort for the roughly two hours of snorkeling time.
Reef‑safe sunscreen: Protects skin and avoids damaging coral—required courtesy when snorkeling near reefs.
Motion sickness medication or bands: Useful for guests who are prone to seasickness, especially on windier days.
Waterproof phone case or camera: Captures underwater life and keeps electronics dry while hopping on and off the boat.
