Guests collected from Hvolsvöllur and Hella cross low farmland, then the road climbs toward Hekla’s flanks where black volcanic roots give way to the rhyolite hills of Landmannalaugar. The guide eases the 4x4 onto rough F-roads; the landscape opens into bands of ochre, rust and mint where geothermal steam dares you closer to soak in a natural pool.
