The road leaves Marrakech before dawn, climbing the Tizi n'Tichka pass to 2,260 m where scrubby Atlas slopes give way to ochre valleys and kasbahs. By midday the land flattens into palm groves and red clay villages; by late afternoon Erg Chebbi’s rippling dunes appear on the horizon, their ridgelines catching the sun as camels file toward a camp.
