The day begins before dawn in Cairo as headlights thread out across flat, ochre plains and palm silhouettes fall away. By midmorning you arrive at Bahariya Oasis — palms and hot springs standing like a surprise of life amid the Western Desert — then climb into 4x4s that take you across fields of black volcanic stone toward the fractured silhouettes of the Black Desert.
