Cerca de mil obras que abarcan desde el siglo XIII hasta el XX, han convertido este museo en uno de los más destacados a nivel internacional. La Colección incluye artistas de la talla de Tiziano, Rubens, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Manet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Kandinsky, Hopper o Picasso. Esta pinacoteca aporta numerosos ejemplos de pintores extranjeros ausentes hasta entonces: primitivos italianos y flamencos, obras clave del Renacimiento, numerosas obras de la época impresionista, como Monet, Degas, Van Gogh y Gauguin. También cuenta con destacadas obras de las vanguardias del siglo XX: fauvismo, expresionismo, surrealismo, abstracción y pop art. Podremos admirar obras de dos de los principales pintores españoles: Picasso y Dalí. La apertura del Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza en 1992 dio lugar, al unirse a al Museo del Prado y al Reina Sofía, al llamado Triángulo del Arte del paseo del Prado, área que concentra el acervo pictórico más importante de España, hoy reconocido Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO.
