You leave Rethymno before sunrise and the bus climbs toward the ragged mouth of Kourtaliotis Gorge. Sunlight strikes limestone walls; the river below dares you with a rush that becomes a whisper as you descend to Preveli. At the mouth, a narrow river threads sand and a stand of native Phoenix theophrasti palms, their fronds leaning like old hands toward the Libyan Sea. A short boat ride from Damnoni deposits you on the crescent of Palm Beach, where sea and freshwater meet and the canyon exhales.
