You climb into an open-top 4WD as the island slips into motion: gulls wheel over black cliffs, Atlantic spray hisses against basalt, and the road peels up into emerald forest. The jeep's rumble becomes the tempo as the guide steers toward Porto Moniz — a coastline of volcanic shelves, natural basalt pools and sea-worn arches.

Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult; the tour is generally suitable for most fitness levels but involves stepping into vehicles and walking on uneven ground.
Expect variable conditions: sunny and warm near the coast, cooler and wetter in higher forested areas; layers and a windproof layer are advisable.
Porto Moniz and the northwest developed around fishing, terraced agriculture and water-powered mills; the Laurisilva forest preserves species from Madeira's early post-volcanic ecosystems.
The Laurisilva is protected as a UNESCO site and visitors are asked to stick to trails; natural pools are monitored to balance visitor access with habitat protection.
