The first light of the day finds vineyards cutting a green band across Ica’s ochre desert; by afternoon the dunes around Huacachina glow and the buggy’s engine rumbles like a live wire. On this full‑day loop travelers move from cool colonial courtyards to wind‑scoured sand, tasting the products and the history that tie the coast to the Andes.
Begin with Hacienda Tacama—one of South America’s oldest vineyards—then cross to Hacienda La Caravedo, where pisco has been distilled here since the 17th century. The route then drops into a small artisanal bodega (Pisco Nietto) to compare large‑scale techniques with handcrafted mistelas and pisco creams. Geologically the region is coastal desert: wind‑blown dunes built from marine sediments, with the Huacachina oasis a rare wet node that still holds water and migratory birds.
Culturally, the tour threads Spanish colonial estate architecture, local viticulture, and the Peruvian pride in pisco as a protected spirit. The afternoon shifts tone—sandboarding practice, dune ascents, then a sunset buggy run across steep faces where the dunes seem intent on reshaping the sky.
Practical notes: expect a 7–8 hour day with private, air-conditioned transport and multiple tastings included. Bring closed‑toe shoes for buggy rides and sandboarding, sun protection, a small daypack, and cash for extra purchases. Travelers with spinal, cardiovascular conditions or pregnancy should avoid the bumpy buggy sections. Plan the day to catch the desert sunset—loads of light, but minimal shade.
The tour runs roughly 7–8 hours (about 420–480 minutes) and is scheduled to finish at Huacachina in time for sunset and the dune buggy session.
