The audio guide steers you down narrow streets, past corrugated tin roofs and clapboard houses, where the ocean almost seems to dare you to remember its shipwrecked past.

Key West’s economy once depended on wrecking and salvaging—laws in the 19th century incentivized locals to recover goods from shipwrecks, shaping the island’s maritime culture.
As a low-lying coral island, Key West faces sea-level rise and reef degradation; stick to marked paths and avoid disturbing shoreline habitats to reduce impact.
