You start before dawn in Abraão, headlamp cutting a narrow cone through Atlantic Forest understory as the island exhales. The trail climbs in earnest—rooty steps, slick stone slabs, and sudden clearings that let the surf at your feet sound like a distant drum. By sunrise the summit opens: a raw, layered panorama of coves, ridgelines and, on very clear days, Pedra da Gávea on the Rio coast daring your eyes to take it all in.

Yes—there’s a sunrise/night option. Guides provide headlamps and will brief you on pacing and safety for pre-dawn sections.

Ilha Grande has layered history—from indigenous settlement to colonial use and later as a penal island; much of the island is now protected as part of state park lands.
The trail runs through fragile Atlantic Forest; stick to marked paths, carry out all trash, and avoid disturbing wildlife to support ongoing conservation efforts.
