You step out above the clouds at Pico do Arieiro and the ridge seems to push the wind into conversation — sharp, cold air that clears your head and demands attention. The trail drops and climbs through sculpted volcanic rock, tunnels cut into the mountain, and staircases that test your calves before rewarding you with a panorama of Pico Ruivo rising like a blunt sentinel ahead.
challenging.
7–8 hours.
Good aerobic fitness and leg strength; able to handle sustained climbs, stairs and some scrambling.
The main ridge section commonly walked is about 6–8 km one way with steep sections and multiple staircases; expect 4–6 hours on-trail depending on pace and stops.
Children under 14 are not recommended; the operator advises 14+ and youths must be accompanied by an adult due to exposure and physical demand.
The operator may cancel in poor conditions for safety; always check the forecast and be prepared for wind, fog, or sudden rain at altitude.
No technical gear is required for the guided walk, but you should have good boots, layered clothing, and the ability to handle exposed, rocky terrain.
The high trails link traditional upland pastures and remote villages; many sections follow routes used for centuries by shepherds and muleteers.
Stay on marked paths to protect fragile high-altitude vegetation; Madeira’s mountain zones are sensitive to trampling and recovery is slow.
